First Country to Elect a Woman President

Iceland was the first country in the world to elect a woman head of state in a national election. This election took place in 1980 and for the next 16 years Vigdis Finnbogadóttir was the President of Iceland.

The Icelandic people were proud of President Vigdis and believe she brought Iceland’s name into the world news in a positive manner. The fact that President Vigdis was single, and a mother too, did not do anything to deter the Icelanders from voting for her.

The President's love for Iceland, it’s nature and people made the Icelandic people stand up taller and be even prouder of their country than ever before.
